GENERAL FOCUS

The Hector Family Foundation is a small, private grantmaker concerned about "high-risk" children, youth, and families in South Florida. The Foundation focuses its grantmaking and other charitable activities on positive social change for young people. It assists local charities in developing new fundraising programs and helps create innovate ways for organizations to build long-term sustainability and demonstrate improved outcomes for the well-being of children and families.

Limited grants may be made to projects and programs, primarily in South Florida, of special interest to the Hector Family Foundation for accomplishing our mission and impacting our community. We encourage partners coming together to work in a disciplined way to produce measurable improvement.

In general, the Foundation does not make grants to endowments, annual fund appeals, political campaigns, or religious organizations.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

The Hector Family Foundation requests a brief initial letter of inquiry in a narrative form and a project summary containing a total budget, other sources of funding and expected completion date.

Letters of inquiry are accepted at any time, but should only be two pages in length. Staff will review your letter to determine if the proposed program fits within the Hector Family Foundation's giving program. The Foundation will invite organizations whose requests appear to have the greatest potential for advancing the Foundation's mission to submit a full proposal, based on specific guidelines.

If a request is clearly outside the Foundation's mission and goals, this inquiry will be declined and notification sent to the organization.

The initial letter of inquiry, limited to a two-page narrative plus requested attachments, must list the legal name of the organization, address, telephone, fax number and email address of your organization. It also must include the name, phone number and email address of the contact person in the organization for the proposal.

General Organization Information:

  • Brief history, with mission and goals.
  • Financial statements of actual revenue and expenses of your organization for the previous two years and a balance sheet.
  • Copy of the organization's 501(c)(3) letter.
  • List of Board members.

Program Information:

  • Detailed summary of the project: how it is to be carried out, what the project aims to achieve, and how the outcomes will be measured.
  • Key personnel.
  • Total budget, including other funders of the project and the percent of the budget the Hector Family Foundation is requested to support (list names of corporations and foundations that you are soliciting for funding and dollar amounts, indicating which sources are committed, pending, or anticipated).
  • Dates of proposed project and location.
  • Signature of executive director acknowledging application.

TIMELINES

Presently, there are no deadlines for initial inquiries to the Hector Family Foundation. The Foundation reviews all grant requests, and based on set criteria, provides assistance on a case by case basis. Every proposal is given adequate time for consideration. Please note that an extended period of time may pass before learning of the status of your request.

All full proposals are screened and evaluated by staff before presentation to the Board of Directors. The Foundation's Board of Directors will meet to review proposals on a quarterly basis and decide whether to grant support. Applicants will be notified in writing of the Board's decision following grant determination meetings which are anticipated for February, May, August, and November.

GRANT GUIDELINES

The Foundation expects tangible outcomes from grantees and requires performance accountability and measurements of how well a program, or agency delivers service. All invited full proposals will include specific plans for evaluating project activities. In each case, The Foundation will assist the grantseeker in developing an evaluation plan appropriate to the nature and scope of the proposed activities.

  • All applicants must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue and not classified as a private foundation as defined in Section 509 (a) of the Code. No grantee is notified until its public charity status is approved.
  • Submitted requests may not exceed $50,000, but most typical grants range between $1,000 to $5,000.
  • The Foundation will not consider grants for individuals, capital campaigns, equipment purchases, endowments, and promoting specific religious doctrine.
  • No grants are made to organizations in foreign countries.
  • The Foundation will not provide funds to lobby legislation or influence public elections.
  • The Foundation often grants support for several years. Funding commitments, however, are generally made on a year to year basis.
  • The Foundation welcomes collaboration with other grantmakers and favors grantseekers with multiple sources of support.
  • Requests for funding are limited to one request per organization per calendar year.
  • Site visits by board members or group presentations to the board may be requested before and after funding. Any discussion or indication of interest, including requests for site visits, are not a commitment by the Hector Family Foundation for funding.
